This small oval bullion embroidered hat badge is made with an unfinished edge to be folded behind the jaceron wire border when sewn to a hat. The overall size indicates it was intended for a low crown officer’s cap, and the bullion crossed swords have been reduced appropriately, being fashioned with only single carrying rings on the scabbards. This has the added touch of having an embroidered regimental numeral “1” in silver, which the maker probably thought was a worthwhile investment since there was sure to be a “first” cavalry regiment in every state. The reverse is left open, showing a cream color webbing with attachment thread for the wire border visible. [SR]
