This original, stamped brass shield device, with its accompanying laurel wreath, was part of the full-dress ornamentation used on the front of dress headgear used by U.S. Marines of the Civil War era and later.
This original, two-piece group consists of a stamped sheet brass shield device ornate with floral edging that measures 3 ½” high x 3 ½” wide. Also, a large, brass stamped laurel wreath some 3 ½” high x 6” wide is included. Both insignia appear never to have been issued or used. The shield does retain three wires soldered to the back while the wreath has no attachment devices. Brass has acquired a mellow patina overall. A very fine and hard to find partial set of U.S. Marine Corps insignia devices. [jet]
