A finely struck, stamped brass South Carolina hat insignia measuring about 3 inches tall. This still retains much of its gilt finish on its face and reverse. Two long brass pins are soldered in place on the reverse, and still intact, to affix it to a shako or hat. This insignia is typical of the prewar militia insignia marketed by military goods dealers to volunteer companies who began to dramatically increase in number in the southern states as the war approached. This an impressive insignia with the state’s Palmetto tree at center with two oblong shields resting against it bearing the state motto, and the date 1776 centered at its base as a reminder of independence. A very showy piece of military headgear insignia. Not a few of these likely saw some early war service as well. (SR)
