This is the spread-winged eagle side plate used to hold up the brim on one side of the Model 1858 Dress hat. This hat is also referred to as the Hardee Hat or Jeff Davis Hat. This stamped brass insignia has both loops on the back with a nice clean front with great detail. The insignia looks unused and has a light patina around the edges.
The plate comes wired to an old piece of white stock that meas. approx. 2.25 x 4.00 inches. Across the top of the card in black marker is “JEFFERSON DAVIS 1858 HAT PLATE” while attached at bottom is an old label that reads “W. STOKES KIRK 3429 GERMANTOWN AVENUE PHILADELPHIA 40. PA.”
William Stokes Kirk, like Bannerman of New York developed a world-wide business dealing in surplus war materials beginning in 1874. W. Stokes Kirk Company was in business with outlet stores on both the east and west coasts of the U.S. selling both surplus military equipment as well as a wide range of camping equipment. The company is now long out of business.
