The m1858 canteen is among the most easily recognizable accoutrements of the Civil War, with nearly every foot soldier requiring hydration while on duty and campaign.
This example retains its original jean-cloth cover and 7 concentric rings on each side to bolster its strength during the rigors of field use. The spout is unmarked save for a crudely scratched “B” on one side and an illegible letter on the opposite. No stopper, chain, or sling are present. The condition of the canteen is good, with light surface oxidation visible beneath the wool cover, which is fairly typical of canteens used in the field.
This is an honest example of a Philadelphia Depot canteen with a rare original cover that would be a welcome addition to any Civil War collection. [cm][ph:c/L]
