Canteen has the usual tear shaped body covered in a gray wool or jean-cloth. The body is in excellent shape with not dings or dents as is the cover.
Worn cork with leather strap is present as is the snap hook.
Cover has four snaps running up one side.
Canteen comes from the collection of the late Robert Jones who was a sailor in World War Two and who collected World War One items from his childhood. Mr. Jones lived in McSherrystown, Pa. not far from Gettysburg with a summer home in Florida. Attached to the canteen is a tag written by Mr. Jones that reads “GERMAN WW1 ARMY CANTEEN GIFT OF MR. CLARENCE BOHN AEF PICKED UP 1918, MOUNTFACON, MUSE ARGONNE SECTOR.”
Research reveals two men named Clarence Bohn in World War One. The first is Clarence R. Bohn of Wisconsin who served in the 4th Evacuation Hospital. The second and more likely candidate is Clarence W. Bohn of Florida (where Mr. Jones summer home was) who served in t-he Motor Transport Corps with Motor Truck Company #467 of Motor Supply Train #17.
Very nice conditioned item with some provenance. [ad] [ph:L]
