The wood on this canteen has a light or “blonde” finish. The body panels are in good condition and free from cracks. They have a worn smooth surface while the side pieces are dark along the edges from handling. Side panels are wrapped by two iron bands, one on each side. Iron has a nice dark patina to it and also holds the three iron sling loops.
Bunghole has no spout or stopper. No sling is present. An overall inspection of the wood and iron show light signs of wear such as rubbed areas and small scratches.
Carved into one of the body panels is “1861 / CONFEDERATE / 1865.” Carving appears to be late 19th / early 20th Century.
Canteen will display well and the combination of light body panels and dark edges is pleasing. [ad][ph:L]
