Intact Civil War Model 1858 corrugated-pattern tin canteen, often called the ‘Bullseye’ pattern. Canteen is similar to those issued to Union troops in the field during the conflict. The body consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin, formed in an oblate spheroid pattern and soldered together at the rim. The bullseye or corrugated pattern of concentric rings began in 1861 as an effort to increase the durability of the item. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of a damp or wet wool cover.
Item is of the New York Depot style and retains its original brown cover. This specimen exhibits eight extruded raised rings on the tin canteen clearly impressed and visible under the wool cover that is in very nice condition with scattered light surface dirt.
Accoutrement has a reproduction cloth sling that has been on the canteen a long time. The iron pull ring and chain are present as are all three metal sling keepers. Original chain and cork stopper are present. Pewter spout is marked with a barely readable “PORTER, HADDON & BOOTH” maker’s mark. Canteen body is in good condition with a small dent felt here and there beneath the wool cover.
Despite the repro sling this is a decent example of a Civil War canteen. [sr] [ph:L]
