The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in good condition overall with light wear and a few areas of separation. The three sling loops, the spout, and stopper are all present. Cork looks to have been chewed by a mouse.
The spout is maker marked “J. C. JOHNSON & CO. / FEB. 5, 65”. Johnson received a contract for 100,000 finished canteens. This is a New York Depot canteen and it still has an iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets. The chain is complete. There is no shoulder strap.
One side has post-Civil War unit markings with crossed rifles stenciled in black.
This is a perfect example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen, albeit from an 1865 contract, recycled for a later era. [jet]
