Standard issue Civil War canteen as carried by all branches during the war.
The canteen body is in good condition with a central dent on each side along with two or three smaller satellite dents. All three sling keepers are present with one having a punched whole that anchors the cork stopper chain which is present. This type of attachment tells us that the canteen was made by the New York Depot. The pewter spout has a rather large lip and the stopper still has the pull ring and the remains of the cork.
The brown wool cover is in very good condition and shows heavy surface dirt from age and storage. Seams are tight. Nothing remains of the sling.
Canteen definitely looks to have been used. [ad]
