This Model 1858 smooth-side canteen is complete with the sling, cork stopper and chain. The body of the canteen has a moderate dent to the center of one side. All three sling keepers are present.
The body is covered in a brown wool material that has seen better days. One side has about 80% of the cover remaining while the other has approx. 90%. One side of the canteen cover has a faded crossed rifle insignia showing possible re-issue and later use but the cover looks to be the original war-time cover.
The sling is the correct Civil War linen sling which is dirty but in good condition. On the sling are the initials “FD” done in period ink. The pewter spout also has the initials “FD” carved on two sides. The cork is complete and the chain is anchored to one of the top sling keepers.
