This Civil War artifact is a great example of an original, Confederate wooden drum canteen. As with many wood drum canteens produced during the war, this circular specimen appears to be made of cedar or cherry wood and measures 7¼” by 2½.” Typical of the canteens carried by many southern soldiers during the Civil War, this ‘Johnny’ canteen represented a very important element of the soldier’s field equipment.
Tight, well-constructed and strong, the canteen retains both its circular, 3/8” wide, iron bands which encompass the canteen’s outer edges and act as clamps. Each band is overlapped and held in place with a single small iron rivet. Canteen has three, brass sling loops set into grooves cut into the wood slats on the exterior. The loops on this canteen also secure its original, cotton cloth carry sling. Sling exhibits a tied knot evident of where the cloth separated at one time. Canteen has a ½” wide, circular opening on its original wood collar. The hand-carved wood stopper appears to be a reproduction item.
Exterior of the canteen wears a pleasing medium brown finish overall while its iron furniture exhibits a dark brown coloring. Wood canteen has no breaks or cracks and has accumulated just surface dirt and grime in recessed areas. This attractive drum canteen presents a fine opportunity for the collector to acquire an original Confederate accouterment.
