Another example of this canteen appears on page 151 of “CIVIL WAR CANTEENS” by Steve Sylvia and Michael O’Donnell. This canteen matches exactly in style, construction and markings the one pictured in the book which comes from the Danner Museum collection.

This example has no known history but is in good condition. It is of slightly concave shape with two spouts on each end of the top. One spout is wide for filling/drinking and one spout slim and may have contained a filtration device that is now gone. The base of the large spout is marked with a maker and “PARIS.” The two sling keepers are riveted to the sides and there is a seam running down the center of the face of the canteen. The body is free of dents and just exhibits some light surface rust and small amounts of the original finish. There are no holes of any kind in the body. Cork stopper and cap are present.

Quoting Sylvia and O’Donnell on this style canteen “We feel certain that the standard CS filter canteens were modeled after this imported French canteen.”
