See O’Donnell and Campbell, Plate 592, for a discussion of these plates. The Philadelphia Fire Zouaves were recruited among the city’s fire companies, men renowned for their bravery in entering burning buildings and fighting fires in an urban setting. They saw active military service in the Civil War from 1861-1864 and were reorganized in 1867 as an independent militia unit. These plates are thought to date from that second organization, which functioned from 1867 to 1873 and show up in two different sizes. This one is the larger, measuring 45 x 73 mm, for the rifle cartridge box with a smaller one intended for the cap box. This is die-struck of rolled brass plate, has no bends, edge dings, breaks or cracks, and retains strong remnants of the gilt finish in recessed areas between the raised letters and rim on the face. On the reverse two small brass fastening wires remain soldered in place. [sr][ph:L]
