Non-excavated examples of Confederate frame buckles are surprisingly tough to find, likely not so much because they were rare during the war, they are probably the quintessential Confederate service belt buckle, but because they were so simple, practical, and unpretentious that they did not seem worth saving, lacking the visual or sentimental appeal of a state seal or Confederate marked belt plate. If on the other hand, you are interested in what the typical Confederate soldier likely wore, or how southern makers short on resources and time managed to supply their troops, these plates, produced throughout the south, show a good number of variations, making them a real sub-category in collecting.
This is an excellent example of the classic “Georgia frame,” a name derived mostly from their appearance on battlefields of that state, but widely made, featuring an integral center bar and teeth cast in one piece with the frame. This has no bends or breaks, and has a nice, uniform, aged patina to the brass. It is well finished, with good edges and corners. The teeth and bar are flat on one side and slightly rounded on the other. One tooth is minutely longer than the other, which is actually a nice touch, indicating how much hand work was involved in casting these plates in sand molds and in finishing.
These were simple, practical, and robust. This one would make a great addition not only to a plate collection, but to a Confederate accoutrement display. [sr][ph:L]
