This is very good non-excavated example of the regulation 1839 pattern oval U.S. cartridge box plate used throughout the Civil War. These plates were both ornamental and practical, helping to keep the flap of the cartridge box down even if the soldier neglected to latch it in the heat of action. The plate shows some minor dings, scratches and age stains, but is medium bright – not polished by a collector or overly dark from age- with the raised letters and rim distinct, the latter showing only one or two shallow dings. The wire loops are present on the reverse, used to secure them on the cartridge box flap by a leather thong, and the lead solder fill used to hold the wire is fully in place, showing a level surface and even gray color.

This is a regulation Civil War accoutrement plate and a pattern worn throughout the war. The 1864 pattern cartridge boxes were intended to omit them, using a “US” embossed on the cartridge box flap instead, but the early and mid-war production boxes remained in use right through to the end. This is a nice example- a good memento if you have an ancestor in the Union infantry- and a key piece for the accoutrement plate collector with a number of variations in letter style, etc., by maker.  [sr][ph:L]
