This is made of die-struck rolled brass in the usual fashion of the M1839 plate and has a single arrow back stud and belt hook soldered in place on the reverse, a pattern of fastener well known from other small oval US 1839 pattern plates, but does not have the lead solder fill. For discussion of these plates see O’Donnell and Campbell, American Military Belt Plates, page 326, Plate 530. They note that a small quantity of these plates and small Maine VMM belt plates were made and issued. For what purpose or under whose authority is unknown, but they suspect they were not subject to US Ordnance Department inspection, thus pointing to a state or private purchase. See their Plate 557 for the VMM plates and additional comments. The assign a tentative date of 1855 to these US plates and note their example was purchased in the 1960s from W. Stokes Kirk, a well-known firm dealing in Civil War surplus material, but also restriking plates from original dies and assembling “hybrid” plates out of original parts. They note that Stokes Kirk did restrike a small oval US plate, but the die they used for those restrikes did not use this letter style. [sr] [ph:m]
