Very nice full standing CDV of John McGeehan as a 2nd lieutenant. He is posed by a balustrade with one hand resting on the hilt of his sword. He wears a chasseur style kepi that looks to be red with a quatrefoil at top and an infantry hunting horn on the front, a dark shell jacket with knot type galloons on the cuffs with light trousers. At his waist he wears a sash and belt with pattern 1851 officers’ belt plate with a model 1860 cavalry saber attached.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper is good. Mount has light surface dirt on the edges.

Reverse is blank but for a period ink ID at top that reads “JOHN MCGEEHAN LT. 146TH N.Y. VOLS.

John McGeehan was born in Derry, Ireland on October 14, 1841 and later came to the United States. He was 20 years old and working as a clerk when he enlisted as a private in Company B, 5th New York Duryea’s Zouaves on July 14, 1861. McGeehan requested a transfer to the engineers but this was denied.

In February of 1862 he became a clerk for the regimental chaplain and was slightly wounded in the foot at Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862. From August to October 1862 McGeehan was on detached service in the adjutant’s Office and then detailed as a clerk to Brigade Headquarters on November 14, 1862. While serving in this capacity he came down with remittent fever. He was ordered to report to Surgeon R. O. Abbott.

On May 4, 1863 McGeehan was transferred to the 146th New York with the rest of the 3-year men from the 5th New York. He was assigned to Company C. He was on duty at Brigade Headquarters in May, June and July. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in Company F to rank from August 17, 1863. He became ill again from September 17 to October 16, 1863 and was absent with leave from March 25 to April 4, 1864.

Returning to his Company in time for the battle of the Wilderness, McGeehan was slightly wounded and captured on May 5, 1864 and was held at Camp Asylum in Columbia, South Carolina. He was paroled on March 1, 1865 at Northeast Ferry, North Carolina and reported to Camp Parole, Maryland on March 6. He was given a furlough and rejoined his regiment on May 2, 1865. Having been promoted to 1st lieutenant while a prisoner, he took command of Company I on May 5, 1865. He mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 16, 1865.

He died on September 25, 1893 and was buried in Cypress Hill Cemetery in Rome, New York. [ad] [ph:L]
