VOL. VIII/ NO. 396. 16pp. This issue appeared the day of the Crater explosion at the Siege of Petersburg, while Sherman maneuvered toward the capture of Atlanta. The front cover features a portrait of William Pitt Fessenden of Maine, the new federal Secretary of the Treasury, along with several short articles reflecting the news of the day To wit: “In the Trenches” [before Petersburg], “Wilson’s raid in Virginia” [cavalry attack on the Danville & Southern Railroad], “The Rebel Invasion of Maryland” [Jubal Early’s Raid], “General Sherman’s Campaign” [near Marietta Georgia]. All accompanied by superb lithographic illustrations.

Editorially, the magazine supports the Lincoln administration in its call for more men—“Our role is not to sneer and grumble at government, but to help it.” Its rear cover cartoon twits “John Bull Among his Foreign Relations.” John Bull slinks away while Denmark is manhandled by Prussia and Austria, and whining, “Oh Cousin John! You promised to help me!”

In terms of condition, the magazine is slightly yellowed else with a few scattered spots of foxing, otherwise in near pristine condition. An excellent war-time Harper’s Weekly. [jp]
