Cast of thick brass, this rectangular belt plate has the raised image of the Virginia state seal with motto, “SIC SEMPER TYRANUS” above, and, “VIRGINIA” below. Seal features Virtus with sword down and spear up, standing over the slain tyrant on a lined field in an oval. Outside of the oval the background is coarse.
Reverse shows single hook which was separately cast and brazed to the plate. Stamped with bench mark, “90”. Initials, “WCP” are scratched on reverse.
Plate exhibits slight waviness and a medium patina, with original gilt showing on high areas. Measures 2” by 3 ½”. [sl]
