RARE ORIGINAL US NAVAL LANYARD

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-103

This original lanyard was part of a naval vessel’s tool chest of implements aboard ship.  Employed by the ship’s gunners who used these accoutrements to fire the ship’s heavy naval cannon.  Once a percussion (friction) primer was inserted in the cannon’s vent, the lanyard rope was hooked on the primer and steadily but quickly was drawn out (not jerked). The withdrawal created a spark at the primer that ignited the charge in the artillery piece. The lanyard device consists of a 68” long section of twisted hemp line (3/16” diameter) with a padded leather loop at one end and a small iron hook at the opposite end. The line runs through a free-floating, ribbed, wooden tapered handle that is stopped at a leather blocker sewn into the line. This unusual lanyard has not been shortened and exhibits light use and wear.
