This is the standard issue double bag knapsack made out of painted canvas. This knapsack has all three roller buckles and three closure straps, though one buckle has separated from the pack. It also has all the shoulder straps with hardware. The bag opens to reveal two inside pockets. One has a flap with leather ties while the other has four folds that come together and buckle into place to form a pocket. All the roller buckles and leather ties are present. The leather shoulder straps are in good condition. The surface of one has some severe crackling with moderate finish loss. The others are good. Marker mark is present as is the inspector’s mark and date of August 1864. Bottom of one of the bags has split along outside fold that meas. approx. 6.50 inches long. There is another split along the top edge that meas. approx. 4.75 inches long. When the bag is open one of the sides has a 3-inch split. All four anchors for the blanket straps are present along the top. Bag has been stuffed with paper to keep its shape and displays well.
