This wooden fife is a wonderful example of a typical musical wind instrument as used during the Civil War period and later. In very good original condition, this post-war cylindrical fife measures 17” long and is made of rosewood or mahogany. The wood fife is pitched in the key of B-flat and displays 2” long German silver ferrules at both ends. Both ferrules have fine, narrow checkering rings at the edges. Exhibited in line on the tapered body one-quarter inch away from one ferrule are six evenly spaced finger holes of varying size (approximately 1/4” dia). Centered on the wood body are two carved initials “W E” one of the other. The mouth hole is located on the swell at the opposite end near the other ferrule. Specimen is very lightly stamped with the maker’s mark of “GEO. CLOOS / CROSBY” which is clearly visible and located 2¾” away from the mouth hole. Instrument is in very good condition with no cracks or splits. Even the surface is smooth and free of blemishes. Musical wind instrument is a fine representative of a Civil War era fife at a very reasonable price.
