The double bag knapsack was among the most important items of a soldier’s kit. It served as a veritable home away from home that was intended to carry bedding and any necessary personal effects.
By 1864, the design of the pack was streamlined from the pattern of 1855 and excluded unnecessary, minor construction techniques (such as reinforcing rivets between the harness and bag).
Often found in a brittle and damaged state, this example is offered in a mostly complete condition with only minor tears in the body fabric of the knapsack, the largest of which measures .75”. They can be found along the bottom edge between and under the 3 closure straps. Several small tears are noted on the sides of the outer bag. None of the tears compromise the integrity of the pack’s body and the tarred canvas material remains pliable enough that they are not readily noticeable. A 3” separation of the inner bag’s corner stitching (the side facing the wearer’s back) is noted.
There is expected crazing to all leather to include the harness assembly, outer closure straps, knapsack strap loops, and the 2 straps that close the flaps of the inner bag. All leather remains pliable, but has dried a bit. One of the leather tie closures of the outer bag is still attached, while the other 3 are missing save for a small section of leather under the slightly tarnished copper rivets. The knapsack straps are missing, as is a small section of the tip of one of the inner bag closure straps (the other is torn but not separated). A 1” section of chain stitching has pulled from the leather piece that secures the bottom of the strap harness to the base of the inner flap, but the stitching at the top (where both should straps join at the wearer’s upper back) is fully intact. All hardware is present, including brass chest strap hooks, triangular loop and hook strap fastener set, and all roller buckles. An inspector stamp on the left strap reads “L L RICHARDS/INSPECTOR/NEW YORK” and the opposite strap is stamped “AUG. 2 1864”.
Overall, a nearly complete pack in a nice condition relative to many extant examples. It would be a worthy addition to any Civil War collection and would also display very well. [cm][ph:L]
