Wood framed pack covered with waterproofed canvas. Often seen during the Civil War on early examples, this knapsack features a unique oil finish that differs in texture from tarred examples of the period. Pack measures approx. 15” long x 4” wide x 14” high. All three blanket straps are intact and retain the roller buckles, but the third strap is missing its end section (the piece is detached but present and included). One of the buckles at bottom is missing while the other is still riveted in place and in good condition. Both upper shoulder straps are present and strongly riveted in place. Shoulder straps are in good condition with minor drying and expected cracking along the outer finished layer. Outer flap is marked in white paint “13” in center. The lower, right side of the pack is also stenciled in white, “A” over the number “40”. The two inner flaps are in good condition and retain all four blue cotton ties. This pack is worn but in great condition when compared to many militia and early issue “hardpack” knapsacks of the Civil War era.
This would be a welcome addition to any Civil War period collection and would display nicely in accordance with its intended use or by itself as a standalone early war piece. [cm][ph:L]
