This is regulation style brass trumpet for mounted troops with a double loop to the tube, which is cylindrical and of relatively uniform diameter for most of its length. Like bugles, these had a floating garland crimped over the rim of the bell, and as is correct for the period this shows a lengthwise seam, visible running back inside the bell. These are distinct from the single twist bugles of copper that were in theory for foot troops, but in fact, both were issued more broadly. We recommend Chris Nelson’s excellent article on these in a 2003 issue of North South Trader.

This is complete with both the mouthpiece and separate crook to alter the pitch. The only marking we see is somewhat blurred marking on the crook that appears to read “SI” followed by another, indistinct letter. It has a pleasing medium patina. We see just a couple very minor dents and one short tear on the overlapping edge of the garland, visible only dead-on into the bell, and some scattered age stains, mostly inside the bell also. Overall length of the trumpet is 19”.

This would make a good addition to a cavalry display, general musician’s display (given that they show up with foot troops also,) or collection of period instruments.  [sr] [ph:L]
