This is a seldom encountered item today, that was a mainstay of 19th century armies. This decorative spade-shaped tip, or finial, would have been found atop most military flag staffs. Used for the various guidons, standards, and National Colors.
This consists of a brass spade-shaped spear tip that is screwed into a socket. The piece measures 8” long overall, 3.63” at the widest point of the spade, with an outside socket diameter of nearly an inch. A small screw hole is found in the bottom of the socket to secure to the pole. The tip is full form with little sign of wear. The brass has a nicely aged natural patina. [jet][ph:L]
