An excellent condition US artillery headstall and curb bit. The headstall is complete with flexible leather showing good finish, black oxidizing toward brown, with some crackling from bending, but little flaking and with all loops and buckles in place. The two large brass faced rosettes with an entwined USA are in place. The bit is the 1863 artillery pattern, showing a small US stamped on the inside, bearing the cavalry style smaller brass boss with simple US in raised letters on stippled ground within a circle, and with the iron tinned and showing just some smaller age stains and rubs. This variation on the M1863 bit is sometimes termed the “type-4,” or the Model 1864. McPheeters and Dorsey think it is an arsenal refurbishing to bring it into line with an 1868 directive that new bits would be tinned and older bits, when brought in for cleaning or repair would also be tinned rather than re-blued or plated. They posit that the older entwined USA bosses on the bit would not stand up to removal for the tinning process and were thus replaced by the cavalry style after the tinning.

This would look great in an artillery collection or display of horse gear.  [sr] [ph:L]
