CIVIL WAR BRASS DOUBLE LOOP TRUMPET WITH CORD BY STRATTON & FOOTE

$2,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1117-166

This double loop brass trumpet features a lengthwise dovetail seam that is one of the things to look for in a Civil War instrument. Stamped in an oval pattern on the bell is “STRATTON & FOOTE / NEW YORK”. This maker of “military band instruments” received many Army contracts during the Civil War for trumpets and bugles made of copper or brass.

The construction and dimensions correspond to military trumpets produced in the 1860s. The trumpet stands 16” tall overall with mouthpiece. This one has a simple rolled edge reinforced bell which has separated about half the way around. The bell is about 4 ½” in diameter. Brass has wonderful age patina.

The trumpet has on it a yellow twisted cord with tassels. These may or may not be original to the piece but have similar wear and age.

There are dings and dents from use; two larger/deeper dents of note. However, this remains an outstanding example of a Civil War military trumpet.   [jet]
