This impressive flagstaff or color pike is the size used to carry regimental battleflags. It bears an impressive brass eagle with spread wings as finial and retains its flag cords as well. This came from a collector who concentrated specifically on the 88th Pennsylvania. His widow is unable to find any background information on it, but there is a very good chance it is related to the regiment.
In U.S. regulations the finial would be a spearpoint, but the plethora of state, local and private presentations to volunteer regiments show a wide variety of finials, including patriotic and martial eagles like this one. Cast in brass, the eagle has no bends or repairs, has wonderful detail, and preserves a nice, aged patina. It is attached to the upper-portion of a two-piece flag staff that has the screw collar at bottom for a lower section, now missing. The wood appears original to the fittings and has good color and finish, with just expected wear and minor handling dings.
The original flag cords with tassels are still with it. The cords show wear and loss to the red and blue colored outer fabric of the cord strands from use and exposure to the elements. Probably as a result of the different dyes used, much of the red is gone, but a lot of the blue remains. The tassels show wear as well, but preserve more of the red and blue, as well as white.‘
The 88th Pennsylvania had a good record, seeing action at Second Bull Run and joining the First Corps, Army of the Potomac, with whom it fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, serving until the end of the war. If we can develop any direct connection between the regiment and the color staff we will certainly pass it on to the buyer. As it is, this is a very dynamic Civil War eagle finial with upper staff and cords that make an impressive display piece that both conveys field use and really grabs one’s attention. [SR]
