Drum is complete with both hoops and wood body. Heads and ropes are old replacements.
Wood body meas. approx. 11.50 inches high and 16.50 inches in width. The body has an untouched light brown finish and is free of cracks. Painted on the front is a wonderful spread-winged eagle with a patriotic shield on its chest with a curling riband in his beak that reads “REGT. U.S. INFANTRY.” Above the eagle are 21 stars and a sunburst. This decoration is hand painted on a blue field and is all original. Decoration is near 100% intact. Colors are strong.
The view hole is flanked by a tack pattern of two vertical lines while the view hole itself is surrounded by tacks in a diamond shaped pattern.
Booth hoops are painted red and are free of any major chips or cracks. Paint is original and shows light wear. Top head is an old replacement as is the bottom head. The bottom hoop still retains what look to be the original snares.
As stated above rope is replacement and attaches to the drum through holes in the hoops. All ears are present.
A peek inside the view hole will reveal a wonderful fully complete maker’s label that reads “MANUFACTURED BY A. ROGERS FLUSHING, L.I.” Label is in good, clean condition and very readable.
Rogers was a maker of drums during the Civil War with a contract for 500 Infantry drums on January 12, 1864. During the war he made approx. 2500 drums.
This drum is uncut and in first class condition.
