Privately purchased by military officers during the war, this ribbon saber knot or sword strap of gold bullion thread is complete with its finial-style stem and large gold bullion knot. In excellent overall condition, the 5/8” wide, 32” long gold bullion device is folded over upon itself and makes a 16” long strap that terminates in a braided bullion stem and a large bullion knot. In action, the knot was secured to the saber / sword hilt and then looped around the officer’s wrist. Purpose of the saber strap was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that loosed the blade from his grip. The bullion ribbon strap is strong with tooled edging and just slight edge fraying. Bullion strap wears a smooth bronze patina with no tears. The large bullion knot is excellent. No maker’s mark visible. These original, officer’s gold thread bullion saber / sword knots are becoming difficult to obtain in the market today.
