Here is an original, late nineteenth century doctor’s leather medical bag as carried by the medical profession on their rounds of patient / house calls. Bag measures approximately 9½” long x 5¼” wide x 7½” high and features a lockable metal jaw hinge that opens to 6” wide and runs the length of the satchel. The single, black leather handle hinged to the upper rib via small iron ‘D’ hooks at each handle end.  Bag exterior constructed of thin, black, tooled leather veneer over black-painted canvas material. Surface is in good condition save for some surface scuffing and rubbing from use. Also, one side of the bag exterior has a built-in side pocket with a flap-cover that features two metal tie-down clasps, along with a circular silver medallion 1½” in diameter centered on the flap.  Medallion is plain and not inscripted. Interior is lined with a bright red leather in very good condition with light scuffing and surface grime but no rips or tears. Some thinning of the lining is just visible at the folds near the hinge area.  A nice medical artifact from the late nineteenth century, this doctor’s bag makes an ideal addition to any medical display.
