This original artifact is a set of brass apothecary scales from the nineteenth century. Set is complete with its six, numbered dram weight discs or measuring weights. Included is a single, small brass weight from another set. The scale device is consists of a hinged pedestal with an attached 6” long, solid brass cross member pendulum. Suspended from the hooked ends of the cross member are 2½” diameter shallow brass-plated dishes. Items are housed in a small, hinged wood-framed paper veneer case. Interior, which is covered in much faded red velvet cloth material, is custom fit to accommodate the weights and scales. This is fine set of measuring scales was frequently used by apothecaries or physicians who carried small sets of scales to individually measure out medications in the office or at the bedside. Enhances any medical display.
