This is a good example of a surgeon’s travel kit; typical of that used during the Civil War. This kit was purchased at an estate sale in Dillsburg, PA. The case is near complete and only lacking a few implements.

Wood case measures 16” x 5.5” x 3” with three small brass hinges and inset lock (no key). The exterior has acquired a pleasing, dark toned patina overall. Top lid features an unmarked oval brass medallion inlaid into the center of the lid. Interior of the case is lined in purple velvet material.

The kit is mostly full of instruments with perhaps four or five missing. The bone saw is missing although the blade remains. Large bone cutting forceps are missing and spaces are present for a few smaller unknown tools.

Snowden & Brother were surgical instrument makers from 1858 to 1872 and located in Philadelphia. They were a major supplier of surgical instruments and military sets to the U.S. Army Medical Department before and during the Civil War. Snowden & Brother (George P. and Henry C.) become partners in July 1858; William Snowden becomes partner in January 1866; Henry C. retires in May, 1872 and sells interest to George.

Highly desirable and sought after 19th century surgeon’s kit offers a unique opportunity to add a piece of American medical history to any Civil War-era or general medical collection. [jet] [ph:L]
