These are often called gold miner’s scales, but of course could be used for other purposes, including by pharmacists measuring out small amounts of drugs or medicine. This is an interesting cased set, bearing a “Made in India” stamp on the beam likely dating it to the mid-1900s and “to weight 50g,” which we take as its maximum capacity. The case has two hinged, snap latches, covered in a dark alligator skin textured fabric, or perhaps the real thing, showing some wear at the edges. The interior has a white silk lined bottom and dark velvet top that has a small round, threaded base plate held by three wires into which the long post with hook may be screwed to hold the beam while in use. This comes with six small weights- three of brass, marked 20G, 10, and 5, presumably grams, and three smaller weights marked 20, 100 and 500, the latter two also marked “W8,” which might simply mean “weight.” This is a nice reminder of the pre-digital age.
