Kit comes in a nicely finished wooden box that meas. 8.25 x 3.00 x 2.00. Box has brass reinforced corners and two parallel strips of brass running across the lid for decoration. At center of the lid is an oval recess for an escutcheon that is now gone. The lock escutcheon is also missing. There is no key.
Upon opening the box, the top tray holds a matching set of 5 different sized scalpels, 2 different sized tenaculum, and an adjustable hook. All are matching with white bone handles and are marked “S. MAW & SON LONDON.”
Lifting out the top tray reveals a lower compartment that is lined with green felt and holds a folded piece of paper with three suture needles, an unmarked foreign body remover and an unmarked forceps.
The underside of the lid has a green felt lined lining which can be lifted to expose another compartment holding three large curved surgical scalpels. These match the other instruments having the same type of handles and maker’s mark.
The Maw Company was in business from 1828 to the 1940’s. The Company name changed several times. They were known as S. Maw & Son from 1860 to approx. 1875.
Very nice looking set. [ad] [ph:L]
