Ca. 1869-90. Black & gold maker decal [inner case]: “Sharp & Smith/Manufacturers/of/ surgical instruments/73 Randolph St./ Chicago”. Case is a wooden box measuring 12 x 5 x 16”, with upper & lower compartments, with ornamental brass corners & hinges with lid nameplate [blank]. Side key-lock plate bears patent date “Pat/d Mar. ‘69”. Bottom instrument compartment contains 11 bone-handled instruments two metal forceps. Upper compartment is empty & missing its right-side mini-compartment—left side compartment intact with leather door & company decal. Two of the dental instruments are marked “J D CHEVALIER” and another, “H. HERNSTEIN”.
The box exterior exhibits minor dings & slight surface crack from left margin to top-center nameplate. Brass furnishings bright & attractive. Key-lock is missing. Box interior clean. Leather & brass trimmed compartment divider is slightly bent. The upper compartment is empty & missing its right-side mini-compartment—left side compartment intact with leather door & company decal. Machine dove-tail edging exhibits minor chipping. Else VG, handsome.
Sharp & Smith was a prominent Chicago surgical-instrument producing firm between 1875-1900. This attractive boxed set is an excellent medical collectible & fine display as well. [JP/LD] [PH:L]
