Very good conditioned three tiered medical kit made by the firm of D. W. Kolbe of Philadelphia. The kit is housed in a brown walnut case with brass hinges and brass scalloped corner protectors on the lid and a red felt lining on the inside. The case also has a thin brass lock escutcheon with a plain brass name plate on top. The box meas. approx. 16.50 inches long x 7.00 inches wide by 3.00 inches tall. The case comes with a key and the lock works.
Upon opening the lid there is a strip of buff leather covering the top tray. This top tray contains: 2 large knives, Tweezers, 2 small artery forceps, 7 small scalpels, a pack of needles, 3 tenaculums and 2 mid-sized curved needles. The pieces missing from this tray is a large knife, a small knife and two smaller instruments that maybe tenaculums. The edges of this top tray still have the original leather lifting tabs.
The lower tray has a bone saw, tourniquet with brass buckle 2 trephines with detachable handle, small compartment containing chain saw and handles, bone chisel, catlin, trocar, gnawing forceps and bone forceps.
In a hidden compartment under the lid is a bullet forceps, 3 curved probes, a Heys saw, straight forceps and a clamp. 3 curved probes are missing as are two other instruments. This compartment is closed by a red felt covered board with brass latches and a nice paper maker’s label that reads “D. W. KOLBE / MANUFACTURER OF/ SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS / PHILADA.
All the instruments are in good condition. Besides the ones missing three other pieces are added to the kit, a tenaculum, a small file and some kind of small scrapper. All the rest of the pieces are marked “KOLBE.” The handles on the instruments are gutta-percha and in fair to good condition with one or two having small cracks. The two trephines are excellent and still have some bluing on them. The interior felt shows light wear as does the exterior of the case.
Overall this set is in good to very good condition and is rare to find so many pieces original to the kit.
