This heavy, cast iron mortar and pestle device was commonly used by military medical personnel in the field, and also by civilian medical personnel on the home front. Cast of heavy iron, the large, 6” high, cylindrical cup-like device has a flared top lip that measures 6” in diameter and tapers to a 3½” cup base. No maker’s marks are visible on the piece. Entire mortar and its pestle exhibit a smooth, hard rusted surface. The accompanying piece is an 11¼” long, round iron pestle with a 2” diameter, round bulbous point on one end and a 1” diameter round bulbous tip on the opposite end. A unique medical artifact with plenty of character, this mortar and pestle combo from the eighteenth century makes an unusual addition to any Civil War collection.
