The Holy Grail of Confederate flag collecting would be one made under the authority of the Richmond Clothing Depot like this. All are basically "cookie cutter" and therefore easily recognized. Offered is a pattern, designed to be flown over forts and garrisons or from naval ships (these particular Richmond types were used mostly by the CSN James River fleet). These are not to be mistaken for others of the 2nd National pattern used on public buildings. This is indeed a battle flag!
Measuring approximately 8+ feet by 10+ feet, this is actually the smaller version of the original design of 16 by 24 feet that were soon discontinued due to expense and the scarcity of blockade run English wool bunting. The flag has been through the hands of prominent dealers and collectors. It was last sold to the consignor by the Horse Soldier a couple of years back. The flag was tested by Fonda Thomsen and that test will be in her files. The flag is also known to flag expert Gregg Biggs. Ms. Thomsen noted in her report the presence of an acrid residue throughout the material (English wool bunting) suggesting contact with black powder and therefore proximity to combat. The present owner in digging deeper into the flags background is convinced that this flag was taken from one of the multitudes of Confederate forts, at Petersburg in April of 1865.
The condition of the flag is excellent when compared to known others of the type. Most of the existing damage is from hard service, rather than insects. It is of particular interest that the heavy canvas hoist with its hemp rope running through it has been cut in several places to tie it to a flagpole. This, in itself, is significant suggesting a permanence at a post like a fort rather than a ship or garrison. The flag has been recently and professionally re-enforced on the obverse by matching colored bits of cloth sewn in place to give the flag even more stability. The colors are good to excellent, and the flag shows both machine and hand stitching. The 2nd National flag officially replaced the Stars and Bars in the spring of 1863. This is both historic and impressive. [pe] [ph:L]
