Two very nice, clean Virginia state seal buttons attached to an old card inscribed with a period ink note that reads “STATE OF VIRGINIA BUTTONS FROM THE UNIFORM OF H. M. STEVENS OF THE REGT.”
The first button is a coat sized three-piece button with plenty of gilt and no dents or pushes. It is Albert’s number VA18 and Tice number VA255A5 with a depressed mark on the reverse of “EXTRA QUALITY” in large letters.
The second is a three-piece cuff button with a light patina and again, free of any push or dents. This one is an Albert’s VA20 and Tice VA261As5 with a depressed mark of “EXTRA QUALITY.”
The card was torn below the inscription but repaired with glue long ago. There are also some scattered ink stains.
The items come in a small display box with a 9th plate sized tintype of a sad looking woman in a striped dress with lace collar wearing a gilt brooch at her neck. The reverse of the image has an old pencil inscription that reads “MRS. H. M. STEVENS OF VA.”
Unfortunately, a definite ID could not be made. [ad] [ph:L]
