Seated view of a young soldier wearing the gray uniform of the 23rd New York. The subject is posed with one arm resting on a table next to his kepi. He wears a light shell jacket with dark epaulettes and vertical dark patches on the cuffs. His trousers match the jacket and have a wide dark leg stripe. His kepi is also light with a dark band around the base with the numbers “23” on the front. Around his waist is a belt with a large rectangular plate that has the Company letter “F” at center. Attached to his belt is a cap box and bayonet scabbard. Image is clear with fair contrast. Reverse has photographers imprint for MOLLESON’S…BROOKLYN, N.Y. with some collector’s information in pencil.
The 23rd New York served at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania during the Gettysburg Campaign from June 18 to July 22, 1863. They also took part in quelling the New York City Draft Riots.
