Civil War period bust view lithograph of Major General Earl Van Dorn. Item is in very good condition. Lithograph is very strong. Reverse has collectors mark and is otherwise blank.
Earl Van Dorn was born in Mississippi on September 17, 1820. He graduated near the bottom of his class at West Point in 1842 and was assigned to the 7th US Infantry. While with the 7th he was stationed in the Deep South. When the War with Mexico broke out Van Dorn was still with the 7th in Texas. He saw action at Monterey, Vera Cruz, Contreras, Cerro Gordo, Churubusco and Mexico City. In March of 1855 he was promoted to Captain in the 2nd US Cavalry.
When the Civil War broke out Van Dorn resigned from the US Army and returned to Mississippi where he was appointed a Brigadier General on June 7, 1861 and was made Major General on September 19, 1861. Van Dorn took command in the Trans-Mississippi Department. He fought at Pea Ridge and Corinth as well as Thompson’s Station. He was murdered by a jealous husband on May 7, 1863.
