Photograph from life of Confederate General Wade Hampton. Image is CDV and shows Hampton in the uniform of a Confederate Brigadier General. Contrast is light around the edges but the image is clear. Paper and mount have light surface dirt. Photographers imprint on back is E. & H. T. ANTHONY…NEW YORK. Old faded pencil inscription on back reads “WADE HAMPTON.”
Wade Hampton was born in Charleston, South Carolina on March 28, 1818. He served in the state legislature from 1852-1861. When the Civil War broke out he raised a Legion and outfitted it using his own money. He served at 1st Bull Run and led a brigade on the Peninsula being appointed a Brigadier General on May 23, 1862. That July he took command of a brigade in Stuart’s Cavalry Corps and served until being wounded at Gettysburg. He was promoted to Major General on August 3, 1863 and upon the death of General Stuart in May of 1864 he took over command of the Confederate cavalry. In January of 1865 he and part of his command joined Joe Johnston’s Army in North Carolina. Hampton was promoted to Lieutenant General on February 15, 1865 being one of only three men to reach that rank in the Confederate Army without formal military training. The other two were Richard Taylor and Bedford Forrest. After the war Hampton returned to politics being elected Governor of South Carolina in 1876 and 1878. He went on to serve as a US Senator from 1879-1891. He died in Columbia, South Carolina on April 11, 1902
