Crisp, clean three quarter standing view of Private Albert J. Lewis of Company C, 4th Mass. Heavy Artillery. Lewis is posed standing by a high-backed chair on which his right arm leans. He wears a forage cap, a shell jacket with turned down collar and light trousers. The collar of the jacket appears to have some piping but there is none on the cuffs or down the front. The lower mount has dark period ink inscription that reads “YOURS TRULY A. J. LEWIS.” Reverse has photographers imprint of CROSS…FORT RICHARDSON, VA. Also on the back is a very delicate looking period ink inscription that reads “LEWIS HAPGOOD, CO.C, 4th REGT. MASS. H. A.” This soldier was from the same hometown as Lewis and served in the same Company and is no doubt the recipient of this image.
Albert J. Lewis was a 29 year old shoemaker living in Feltonville when he enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on August 22, 1864. The regiment served in the defenses of Washington during its year long enlistment. Lewis was mustered out on June 17, 1865.
Image is in exceptionally good condition.
