Bust view of Finch in the uniform of a Union Major. He wears a double-breasted frock coat with Major’s shoulder straps. Image is clear but the contrast is a little light. Image and mount have some light surface dirt. Bottom of mount is signed in ink “MAJ. A. J. FINCH.” Reverse has photographers imprint for “HALL’S GALLERY… NASHVILLE, TENN.” Reverse also has green tax stamp and collector information written in pencil.

Amasa J. Finch was born October 19, 1841. During the Civil War he served in 3 different regiments. He first joined Company K, 1st Michigan Infantry as a Sergeant on April 18, 1861. After being heavily engaged at First Bull Run the regiment was reorganized for three years service. Finch was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on August 22, 1861and was transferred to Company C. He resigned at Fort Monroe, Va. on April 15, 1862. On July 30 of the same year he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 18th Michigan Infantry being mustered in on August 6, 1862. Finch served with his regiment doing guard duty in Kentucky until he was discharged for promotion to Major of the 12th USCT on November 3, 1863. The 12th Regiment USCT was assigned to guard duty along the railroads of Tennessee and Alabama but saw action at the Battle of Nashville and in the pursuit of Hood’s Army afterward. The exact date of Major Finch’s final discharge is not known. He died on May 12, 1878 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A large stone marking his grave states that he was wounded three times during the Battle of Nashville.
