Here is a large, framed, sepia-toned copy of an original photo taken at a post-war regimental reunion that shows approximately one hundred and thirty Civil War veterans, all allegedly from the 102nd PA Volunteer Infantry regiment. The extraordinarily clear framed photo has an image size of about 13” high by 17” wide and resides in a period wooden frame that measures 25¼” wide x 21 3/8” high. The large image is behind a modern single mat and housed within a glassed-in oak frame.  Backing bears a modern gallery’s sticker at the lower left edge.  Photographer is unknown but he captures an outdoor scene in Pittsburgh of a large gathering of Civil War veterans posing for the camera on a summer’s day next to a large building in south side Pittsburgh.

An old paper note is taped to the face of the glass and states… “102nd PA Vol Inf.  / Old 13th PA Reserves / Taken at South Side Market Hall” / 1878”. Frame back side has a copy of this group image and a page copy of the regimental history that shows states on Aug 18, 1878, the unit held its annual reunion in the South Side, Pittsburgh Market Hall in Pittsburg.  However, cursory research of the South Side Market Hall building indicates that the original market hall was opened in 1893, burned in 1914 and reopened in 1915.  We surmise that this photo image was taken not in 1878 but later in the mid 1890s because of the age of the men shown (middle age) plus the style and look of their dark suits and their dark derby / bowler hats, fedoras and walking canes.   Most of the veterans wear vests, and many have reunion ribbons, GAR badges or ladder badges pinned to their lapel jackets.

Regiment was organized in Pittsburgh in August and September of 1861 and was ordered to Washington. Assigned to Keyes’ Corps, the 102nd participated in the siege of Yorktown, battles of Williamsburg, Fair Oaks and Malvern Hill in VA. Unit was actively engaged at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg at Marye’s Heights, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. This post-Civil War framed photo of the hard-fought 102nd Pennsylvania veterans from Pittsburgh would make a wonderful research project.  A fine, framed image grouping to enhance any Civil War collection or a Pennsylvania display.
