Philip M. Arnold was born in King George, Virginia in 1837.  According to records, he enlisted as a Second Lieutenant on February 10, 1862 and mustered into Company C of the 15th Virginia Battalion of Cavalry.  The 15th Battalion was eventually combined with the 14th Battalion to form the 15th Virginia Cavalry Regiment – which served with distinction under the command of JEB Stuart.  His term of service would not last long, however, as he passed away on September 1, 1862.  Philip is buried on family land known as “Willow Hill” in King George County, Virginia with his immediate, surviving family members - his grave can still be found and was updated on several online databases as recently as this year with photos of the extant headstone.

His framed ½ plate tintype is in a lovely condition with very striking hand accents, including hand painted gold to highlight his uniform buttons, frock trim, and collar insignia.  His frock is layered in hand painted gray, while his piercing eyes have been highlighted by a touch of blue.  Various understated hand touchups further accentuate his skin and hair.  The period frame is a commonly seen type, with a 2.25” recess and border trims of black, natural wood, and geometric gold patterning.  The joints are tight and secure, and the backing is a thin stained wood, which matches the frame and is secured several finishing nails and metallic tabs.  The photograph itself is matted in several layers of textured paper colored gold, tan, and an off-white. The area of exposed photo is an oblong oval shape and measures just under 6.25” by just less than 4.25”.

All told, a photograph such as this in its present condition is a rare piece.  This item has broad appeal to collectors of Confederate memorabilia (with a nice link to JEB Stuart), Cavalry enthusiasts, and Civil War photography aficionados.  It would display beautifully among any collection.  [cm][ph:L]
