Item Code: 1254-96

This cdv photograph is a seated studio view of John Sedgewick in Major General’s uniform. He sits, with hand folded in lap. He is wearing a double-breasted frock with Major General’s (two-star) shoulder straps. Clarity and contrast are perfect, as you’d expect from a Brady image. The ruled mount is in very good condition. A Brady, Washington imprint is along bottom edge on the front.

A somewhat modern ink identification is on the back along with service information. There is also a BRADY, Washington, DC b/m.

John Sedgwick (September 13, 1813 – May 9, 1864) was a military officer and Union Army general during the Civil War. He was wounded three times at the Battle of Antietam. He was not present at Fredericksburg, but had returned in time for 2nd Fredericksburg and Salem Church. He was at Gettysburg but his Corps was only lightly engaged. Sedgwick was killed by a sharpshooter at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 9, 1864. He is remembered for an ironic remark among his last words: "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."    [jet] [PH:L]
